Scott Cohen, MD, FAAP
SCOTT W. COHEN, MD, FAAP, is a board certified pediatrician who has created a new philosophy in pediatrics. With the motto, “the best doctors are teachers,” Dr. Scott, as his patients refer to him, has developed a program called COMMON SENSE PARENTING (www.commonsensepediatrics.com) where he educates patients and families on how to raise healthy children-stress free.
This approach is highlighted in his book, Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby’s First Year.
Dr. Cohen is originally from Maryland and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Cornell University. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen completed his pediatric residency at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles in June 2003, where he was the recipient of the Victor E. Stork Award for Continued Excellence and Future Promise in the Care of Children and the Associates and Affiliates award for scientific knowledge, clinical judgment, and excellence in human relations.
He was also awarded the Community Service Award for helping develop Helping Hands for Children, a curriculum which teaches pediatricians to effectively advocate for the needs of children.
Dr. Cohen is the co-founder of Beverly Hills Pediatrics and an attending physician and active member of the teaching staff at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.
He was the recipient of the 2005 and 2008 Cedars Sinai Medical Center Physician Recognition Award in Pediatrics and was named the 2006 Cedars Sinai Pediatrician of the Year. Dr. Cohen has been listed in Super Doctors 2007-present and was selected for the Top Doctors Award by the Los Angeles Magazine for 2018 and 2019.
Dr. Cohen is a featured expert on www.parentsask.com where he answers common parenting questions via a video blog. He is also the pediatric expert on www.videojug.com, a website that showcases answers to many common pediatric questions in video format.
Dr. Cohen lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two girls, Aubrey Grace and Lexi James.
Bess Raker, MD, FAAP
Dr. Bess Raker is a board certified pediatrician who is committed to educating parents about the care of their children. She is particularly passionate about newborn growth and development and first-time parenthood. “Dr. Bess”, as she is affectionately known by her patients, enjoys the deeply personal relationships she has with all of her families and is honored to be such an integral part of their lives.
Dr. Bess completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she treated patients with a wide spectrum of medical conditions. She remains involved in various outreach and fundraising activities for CHLA.
She received her medical degree from University of Arizona. Dr. Bess graduated as a Dean’s Distinguished Graduate from University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Her father was a beloved pediatrician in Phoenix, Arizona. She is thrilled to continue the family legacy and even gets to take care of some children of his patients!
Dr. Bess is the co-founder of Beverly Hills Pediatrics, Beverly Hills Pediatrics After Hours and an attending physician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She was recently listed as one of “Hollywood’s Top Doctors” by the Hollywood Reporter.
Dr. Bess loves living in LA, checking out new restaurants, enjoying the outdoors and spending her free time with her husband (who is even taller than her) and their two shockingly tall children – Bradley and Hannah.
Inessa Grinberg, MD, PhD, FAAP
Dr. Inessa Grinberg enjoys working with children of all ages, providing guidance as kids move through their many different stages. She emphasizes preventative health and strives to empower families with knowledge and support. Her goal is not only to provide medical care, but also to serve as a resource for the just-as-important non-medical challenges that define everyday family life.
Dr. Grinberg is originally from the former Soviet Union. She moved to Los Angeles in her early teenage years and completed her undergraduate education in Molecular and Developmental Biology at the University of California.
She then embarked on a combined MD/PhD program at the University of Chicago, receiving Honors in her medical studies and a PhD in Human Genetics. Her graduate work was honored with an award for most meritorious research in the general field of Pediatrics and resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications as well as a book chapter on neurodevelopment.
Dr. Grinberg went on to complete her residency training in Pediatrics at UCLA, where she was the recipient of Alice Litman Moss Resident Award for outstanding, compassionate and sensitive performance in both clinical and research fields.
Dr. Grinberg happily joined the Beverly Hills Pediatrics team in 2010 and is currently an attending physician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Grinberg has been listed in Super Doctors 2016-present and was selected for the Top Doctors Award by the Los Angeles Magazine in 2019 .
Dr. Grinberg’s favorite pastime is spending time with her husband and three sons. When not at work, she can be found losing a game of tennis to her oldest son, going for long hikes with her 4th grader, or snuggling up and reading with her little one.
John Pham, MD, FAAP
Dr. Pham believes superheroes come in all sizes and ages. His patients have taught him strength and courage are not defined by the number of years one lives. Caring for children at their most vulnerable moments have helped him realize every superhero needs a sidekick, someone to stand by their side through the thick and thin and help them fight against their villains. That is exactly what Dr. Pham strives for as a pediatrician. Not only as a faithful sidekick to the true superheroes, but also as their advocate and biggest fan!
Dr. Pham’s path to a Pediatrician began at a young age. His admiration for a child’s unbounded imagination and eagerness to learn lead him to volunteering as a hip hop dance instructor, camp counselor in Japan, and mentor for the Boys & Girls Club. Through these opportunities, Dr. Pham developed his passion for working with children and adolescents. Coordinating various avenues for children to express their creativity has shown Dr. Pham the important role of music, art, and dance in a child’s development and is thus something he strongly encourages for his patients. Dr. Pham continues to volunteer for multiple organizations locally and around the world, including medical missions to Jamaica and Ethiopia.
Dr. Pham was born and raised in Oregon. He graduated magna cum laude from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, where he received numerous awards for his academic excellence and clinical research. Dr. Pham returned to the west coast for the opportunity to train at one of the top-ranked programs in the nation for his pediatric residency, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Pham enjoys spending his free time outdoors hiking, camping, and snowboarding. Although he does not perform anymore, Dr. Pham still enjoys hip hop dancing for fun. He also has an appreciation for world travel and learning about other cultures, including trying all their native delicacies!
Kacey O’Malley, MD, FAAP
Kacey was born and raised in Morgantown, West Virginia. She attended college at Elon University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies. She then went on to receive her medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. While in medical school, she also completed an advanced assistantship in alcohol and drug dependency in Pittsburgh. She completed her residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she was awarded the Gary F. Krieger, M.D. Pediatric Advocacy Award. For the last two years, Kacey has been practicing Pediatrics in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. She is thrilled to be coming back to Los Angeles to join the Beverly Hills Pediatrics team.
Kacey is passionate about preventative medicine, and loves helping patients and their families establish healthy habits that will allow them to live long, healthy lives. She also has a a special interest in global medicine, and has performed extensive medical volunteer work all over the world, with an emphasis on helping communities build their own sustainable healthcare systems. Some of her other areas of interest include mental health disorders and caring for patients with complex medical conditions. Outside of work, Kacey enjoys hiking with her dog, Ollie, exploring the many wonderful restaurants and cultural activities of Los Angeles, and spending time with her new nephew, Javier.
Alexandra Dawn McCollum, MD, FAAP
Dr. Alexandra Dawn McCollum has recently joined Beverly Hills Pediatrics. ‘Dr. Alex’ was born and raised in Chico, California. She completed her undergraduate training at UC Santa Barbara and graduated from St. George’s University, School of Medicine in 2005. She then completed her pediatric residency training at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, in New York where she was recognized with the Resident of the Year teaching award. She later went on to complete a one year post-doctoral research fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
Dr. Alex has been practicing general pediatrics since 2009 in both New York and Los Angeles. She was listed as one of the 2019 Top Doctors in Los Angeles magazine. She has a special interest and expertise in pediatric dermatology — she loves rashes. One of her favorite parts of being a general pediatrician is the relationships she builds with the families she cares for. She finds motherhood to be the most challenging and rewarding part of life. As a parent, she understands first hand the desire to do the very best for our children knowing that in the age of social media it’s hard to weed through all of the information we are faced with in making the best decisions we can for our kids.
When she is out of the office she and her husband Dr. Josh Sherman are busy with their three children, Jordan, Jake and Lena. They enjoy going to the beach, swimming, cooking and travelling to visit family.
Karen Hovav, MD, FAAP
Dr. Karen Hovav is a board certified pediatrician who is thrilled to be joining the BHP family in their newest office, Beverly Hills Pediatrics, The Valley. “Dr. Karen” is passionate about empowering parents with the knowledge and confidence needed to raise healthy and happy children. In the modern age of information overload, she wants to help parents feel at ease knowing they are providing the best care for their child.
As part of her mission to distill medical advancements into helpful guidance, Dr. Karen serves on the Medical Advisory Board of WhatsUpMoms, the #1 parenting network on YouTube and a source of informative and entertaining parenting advice on the web. As an author for the organization, Dr. Karen has written numerous articles that seek to use evidence-based medical guidance to help teach parents and make their lives easier.
Dr. Karen grew up in Southern California and graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University with a dual degree in Psychology and Neuroscience. She received her medical degree from The Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Dr. Karen completed residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, during which time her special interest in international medicine led her to complete rotations in Costa Rica, Peru and Israel. Her love of travel continued after residency. After spending a few years working in private practice in Philadelphia, she spent 6 months indulging her inner free spirit by backpacking through Southeast Asia, where she spent part of that time volunteering with various organizations. Her experiences ranged from serving as the sole attending pediatrician on an Operation Smile mission in China, to taking care of children at an orphanage in Thailand and teaching medical workshops for parents in India.
Since then, Dr. Karen has spent 8 years working in private practice in Los Angeles. Dr. Karen is finally coming “home” in a sense, since her first job out of residency was working at Beverly Hills Pediatrics. She is currently an attending pediatrician at Cedars Sinai Hospital, and is fluent in Hebrew and Spanish.
In her spare time, Dr. Karen can be found with her husband chasing after their 3 young children, twins Idan and Brielle and their wanna-be-a-triplet brother Eli.
Eugenia Volkin, MD, FAAP
Dr. Volkin grew up in Queens, New York and was living on the East coast until her recent move to Los Angeles. She attended State University of New York at Downstate for medical school and completed her pediatrics residency training at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Volkin was in private practice in Connecticut prior to moving to Los Angeles in 2019.
Dr. Volkin is very excited to join the Beverly Hills Pediatrics family and help spearhead The Valley office of BHP. Dr. Volkin is passionate about taking care of children and helping them stay healthy all the way through adolescence. She believes it is incredibly important to listen to her patients and families, to treat every child with kindness and compassion, and to support their individuality. Dr. Volkin also has a special interest in helping new moms establish and maintain a breastfeeding relationship with their babies.
In her free time, Dr. Volkin loves to bake, tend to her plants and flowers, travel, and most of all, hang out with her husband, Dmitry, and their toddler son, Eitan.
